76. SLAV ARCHER

An extract from Armies of the Dark Ages 600-1066
by Ian Heath

76.      SLAV ARCHER

This figure is based on a 9th century Moravian plaque. He wears a cloth, fur or felt cap, linen tunic and baggy trousers taped at the ankles. Bows were another of the Slavsí principal weapons. The Byzantine Strategicon claims that their arrows were poisoned, though this seems rather unlikely. Archers were a particularly important element in Polish armies.
